known bug, edit opensc.conf and set the correct path to libpcsclite.so.1.
then opensc-tool should find your pcsc readers.

Regards, Andreas

I did:

sudo gedit /etc/opensc/opensc.conf

modified to be:
                # Use specific pcsc provider.
                # Default: /usr/lib/libpcsclite.so
                provider_library = /lib/libpcsclite.so.1

and:

marcin@marcin-desktop:~$ opensc-tool --list-readers
Readers known about:
Nr.    Driver     Name
0      pcsc       MSI StarReader SMART (20070818000000000) 00 00

Works thank you very much!

Until it gets fixed I created a FAQ entry [1] for this, if you have more details (like Ubuntu/Debian releases etc) please improve it.

The correct way to fix it would be a re-compiled package, as ideally there should be *no* config file at all (or if it gets installed, it should have all lines commented out)
